'Planet of Apes' sequel swings in to rave reviews

"'Apes' will certainly benefit from the weak slate over the next couple of weeks," Jeff Bock of box office tracker Exhibitor Relations told AFP ahead of the film's Friday release.
The movie starts off 10 years after the last one, with a monkey-borne virus having devastated the human population and crippled the Earth, embodied in an artfully ravaged San Francisco.
The apes have meanwhile developed into talking, reasoning human-like creatures who ride horses. Their leader is Caesar, who led them to freedom in the previous movie.
But the uneasy peace is disturbed when the humans try to reach a deal giving them access to a dam in the forests north of San Francisco, which they need for electricity.

The question raised by the film is "Should one species be more important than another?" said British actor Andy Serkis, who plays Caesar, in a cast also including Jason Clarke, Keri Russell and Toby Kebbell (Koba).
"Do we have the right on this planet to say 'one kind of person is better than another'?"
Throughout the film, director Matt Reeves uses metaphors to highlight humans' and apes' similarities, stressing that fear, greed and egotism can also corrupt monkeys, who previously had organized themselves for the common good.
"Any kind of absolute belief system is fundamentally flawed because it doesn't take into account that people are different and we have to embrace that and celebrate it," said Serkis, describing his ape character.

The special effects in the film, the eighth made from a cult novel published in 1963, are based on so-called motion capture or performance capture technology, in which human movements are used to animate digital characters.
"Avatar" was until now the prime example, but it has also been used it in the 2011 "Planet of the Apes" film, as well as in "The Adventures of Tintin" the same year, and "King Kong" (2005).
"Performance capture isn't about doing gross movements and pantomiming," said Serkis. "The movie really means something and it's very tenderly played, the emotional content of this movie is huge," he said.
Exhibitor Relations expert Bock said the film is expected to cash in big on a generally slow box office year.

LeBron James’ Absence Demands Explanation During Starz's ‘Survivor's Remorse’ Panel
At the top of the session, the first question from press was, “So, LeBron couldn't make it?”
The basketball player was an early inspiration on the project. Now based in Boston, the show was once set in James’ own Cleveland.
“There are a lot of earlier drafts that no one has seen,” writer and executive producer Mike O'Malley said.
“Survivor's Remorse” tells the story of a young man named Cam Calloway (Jessie T. Usher), who's challenged with honoring those who helped him reach success as his basketball career goes into overdrive.
With about half of the panel completed, the producers were once again faced with explaining James’ absence.
“What exactly is LeBron doing today?” a reporter asked.
On the spot and amid laughter, executive producer Maverick Carter said, “He may be in the H.R. office filling out his paperwork for his new job, getting a physical…”
That's likely true. It was announced earlier on Friday that the four-time MVP left the Miami Heat to rejoin the Cleveland Cavaliers. But, Carter made it clear that his absence during the panel was no indication of James’ work ethic or how he feels toward the series.
“LeBron is very, very busy with his job and the playoffs and going through all the free agency things,” he said. “He's obviously a big supporter of the show, a big supporter of Mike's. He loves the show and obviously he has his reasons, he's not here.”
He continued, “He is getting a new job, literally. I was being a little sarcastic, but the truth is he got a new job today and he's celebrating with his family. And when you get a new job at the NBA, instead of going through H.R. like a normal job, you do have to go through a physical.”
“Survivor's Remorse” airs in the fall.

Drug dealer releases video of Angelina Jolie as a drug addict

Angelina Jolie as a drug addict
Angelina Jolie has admitted many times in the past that she was a drug addict, describing it as a ‘dark’ and ‘dangerous’ period of her life which she was lucky to survive but a video she may not want her kids to see has surfaced. The video was released to National Enquirer magazine recently by Angelina Jolie’s former drug dealer, Franklin Meyer, who claims he shot it in 1999 after she called him to her to home to re-supply her with heroin and cocaine.

Meyer claimed he would see Angelina Jolie, who at the time was dating actor Billy Bob Thornton, two or three times a week whenever she was New York and she would generally spend around $100 on heroin and cocaine, and would take the drugs in front of him.
“Angie was a client of mine for several years. I sold her heroin and cocaine. One day she called me up and wanted me to drop by her place. That was her way of telling me she wanted me to bring her drugs. At the time, I had just bought a video camera and decided to bring it along. When I arrived, I just gave her the drugs and then she gave me the money.’
Convicted drug dealer Meyer said he kept filming her as her father, actor Jon Voight, called her to discuss family matters. In the video Angie’s eyes are bloodshot, her arms emaciated and scratched, her fingernails dirty…and the room filthy. But all these was 15 years ago, she’s gone on to become one of the biggest film stars in the world, involved with one of the hottest men in the world, has 6 kids and is a humanitarian. What a woman! A Daily Graphic Report: Hope for Castro fades as family house mourns in Takoradi
Mallams and spiritualists
The search has drawn into its fray Mallams and spiritualists who all claim that Castro is not dead. A self-styled Mallam Djeta from Nsawam, who showed up at Ada yesterday, asked for permission to go and rescue Castro, whom he (the Mallam) claimed he had seen through a vision to be alive. Although he said Castro could not be saved after 50 minutes, since Castro could be taken deeper by the spirits that took him, the Mallam failed in the rescue attempt and instead asked for a white ram to perform some rites before that could be done.
Situation in Ada
Speaking to journalists yesterday after a series of meetings with a high-powered police delegation and owners of the two holiday resorts where Castro and his friends lodged before the incident, the Ada East District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr John Nurudeen Ahortu, said the musician could survive in the water for three days with a life jacket.
He said it was the first time such a mishap had happened to someone on a jet ski and added that measures were being put in place to forestall a recurrence. The high-powered police delegation included the Tema Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mrs Beatrice Vib-Sanziri; the Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olivia Turkson, and the Ada Marine Police Chief, Chief Superintendent Owusu Berko.
Information released to the media was, however, scanty, with the police reluctant to say anything about the incident or investigations that had been conducted so far. The owner of Aqua Safari, where the jet ski was rented, did not only decline to speak with the media but also asked the police to bar the media from entering the resort.
Asamoah Gyan, Castro on weekend getaway
Other reports indicated that the musician, who is feared drowned, had checked into the resort with the Captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, on a weekend getaway last Friday. The Asamoah Gyan group, however, had to leave for another resort — the Peace Holiday Resort, also at Ada — last Saturday afternoon to make room for another group which had also booked the place for a conference.
As the Peace Resort had all of its speed boats broken down, Castro was said to have gone back to Aqua Safari, where he rented a jet ski and was given one life jacket in addition. It was while he was skiing last Sunday that he picked the lady friend who had no life jacket on. When she fell off at a point, Castro, in his bid to save her, also fell into the water and both of them have not been found since then. The jet ski has, however, been retrieved. When the Daily Graphic visited the Peace Holiday Resort yesterday, it was met with sullen faces, a tense and eerie atmosphere, as well as unfriendly gazes and comments.
Turbulence at estuary
According to Mr Samuel Tei Adano of the Daily Graphic who accompanied the Marine Police in a boat on one of their searches, there was extreme turbulence when they got to the estuary, with all on board trying to clutch onto something in order not to fall off. He said the police remarked that if, indeed, the pair had gone through that area on the jet ski, as was being suspected, they could have easily been thrown off.
Meanwhile, Chief Supt Berko has appealed to the government to supply the Marine Police Unit with more and larger craft for search and rescue operations. He said efforts at locating the missing friends would continue today.
Family house in Takoradi
In a related development, Andrews Tetteh reports from Takoradi that the family and friends of the musician gathered at his father’s residence when they heard of the incident involving the musician. He said other well-meaning Ghanaians who did not want to believe what was being reported in the media and on social media also went to the house to seek confirmation of the news of the tragic incident.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic, Castro’s father, Mr John Eshun, said although he had also heard of the news being reported by the media, he would only believe it when he saw his son’s corpse.
He said he would travel to Accra and join his wife, who was in Accra when the incident occurred, to confirm their son’s death. Family members who had gathered at the house also refused to accept the news of Castro’s passing, although they occasionally shed tears as more posts about the incident kept surfacing on social media.
